London 3/10

Yesterday we took the suggestion of our hostess and caught the train out to the Shoreditch High Street in Spittalfields. This used to be a Jewish working class area where the main employment was in the brickworks. We strolled the High Steet eyeing off the street food stalls near the Station and then looking at the more up market restaurants in the redeveloped street. This brought us to Brick Lane which has been prettied up but not rebuilt. It is a long street of small shops with everything from trendy designer wear to fast food and imported leather wear. We were amazed at how many shops were selling leather jackets and the huge stock that they carried. With Winter approaching it is probably not all that surprising. Further up the street was the night entertainment area with huge spaces to accommodate bands and crowds. The brickworks was at the end with the large chimneys still in place. The remains of the brickwork embankment beside the new railway line showed how bricks had been used for everyhing here. Interestingly there were two Beigal Bakeries (that's how they spelt it). Bob was sorely tempted by the one selling hot corned beef beigals. The queue out the door showed how good they were.  In the end we went back to the street stalls to have plates (cardboard) of roast pork and salad while we watched a street barber creatng the latest in hair and beard trim for a trendy young man.
Back to central London then to find a money changer and to buy a "giant" Cornish Pasty for our dinner. We  decided to dine at home because I have just gone down with Bob's cold as he is recovering. I didn't fancy hopping on the bus to go up to Crystal Palace so the pasty and fruit filled the role nicely.
